Response to Reed’s Claim That Trumpcare Doesn’t “Touch Medicaid”

PAINTED POST, N.Y. – Congressional candidate Rick Gallant issued the following statement in response to statements by Congressman Tom Reed on MSNBC today:

“Congressman Tom Reed was defending Trumpcare in an interview with Katy Tur today on MSNBC today when he stated ‘Well, that’s why we don’t touch Medicaid - Medicaid itself. People at poverty or below will be taken care of in both bills.’ Reed went on to clarify that ‘It’s touching Medicaid expansion.’ This statement is ridiculous since both the House and Senate versions of the bill cut Medicaid.

According to the CBO score released today, the Senate bill cuts $772 billion from Medicaid through 2026. This will have a devastating effect on people in our district, especially children, elderly people, and people with disabilities. According to The Center for American Progress, the earlier House version of the bill would result in 33,800 people in New York's 23rd District losing Medicaid coverage, and the Senate version cuts Medicaid even more than that.

These cuts to Medicaid enable a tax cut for the wealthiest Americans. It's all about priorities. It would seem that tax cuts for the wealthy are more important to Congressman Tom Reed than health care for the people of his district.”
